Dear Lucas, 

When you built GDAL you need to build it with GEOS support or spdsubset will 
not be able to calculate the polygon / point intersection, hence the error you 
are seeing. GEOS is available for download from http://trac.osgeo.org/geos/ and 
if it is installed on your system then when you configure GDAL is should just 
pick it up.
