Hi All,

I’m sending one email to both lists, as there seem to be a couple thread on the
same topic (or maybe I’m just getting it as a couple threads by being copied).

In any case, as Kate has already stated - we were just talking about this the
other day and thinking through some paths to get to a point of using:
"GPL-2.0-only" as the short identifier for when one means exactly that. The
FSF is supportive of this end goal, but again as Kate has already stated - the
trick is how to get there. GPL does not exist in a vacuum, so we need to make
sure that either what’s good for the geese is also good for the gander (other
licenses, use of SPDX, etc.); or we consider a proposal that treats the GPL
family of licenses unique if that’s warranted.

In any case, this is a discussion that needs to start with the legal team, as
the steward of the SPDX License List, so I’d like to ask that we move/keep the
discussion there for the time being. If you are not on the legal mailing list,
you can join here: http://lists.spdx.org/mailman/listinfo/spdx-legal

I’m sure we’ll want other input from the other teams, but I’d appreciate it if
we could gather there for the time being.

I also intended to put up a wiki page in the legal team wiki site walking
through some of the scenarios and potential issues. That will help everyone
see where the pros and cons are; and then we can start to hash out the best
all-around approach. I will try to get that page up over the next few days (or
early next week) and will be sure to send the link to all.

Please let’s also keep the conversation productive and positive; back-handed
stabs at the SPDX team or Monday-morning-quarter-backing are not helpful (and,
quite frankly, I take them personally!)

Thanks for all the helpful input. It’s always interesting to me when something
starts to percolate, and crops up in different places or by different people at
around the same time. As the saying goes, I guess great minds think alike ;)

Cheers,
Jilayne
