This isn’t developed by Redis. It’s developed by FOSSA – a license scanning
startup company. And the goal seems to be, in a cynical reading, to make most
license scanners fail by detecting snippets referring to FOSS licenses, while
not detecting their negation by the new clause.

While the exact naming is probably a question for the legal team, I suspect we
want to have this clause in our exception list sooner rather than later.

Subject: RE: [spdx-tech] Commons Clause & AppBOMination

I recommend waiting for a while before assigning the name “Commons” to this
license rider developed by Redis Labs.

There’s a big firestorm on Hacker News about what appears to many people to be
deceptive naming. “Commons” makes it look like this is a Creative Commons
license (even though Creative Commons Corporation has not authorized or
approved it), and the way they’ve connected it to the Apache license makes it
appear to many like the Apache Foundation authorized it (which it has not).
Both organizations may have standing to sue for trademark violation if Redis
Labs won’t rename this rider, since likelihood of confusion in the marketplace
is key test for trademarks.

If it must be named, I suggest using a name like “Redis-Commons” so that it’s
clearly *NOT* from the Creative Commons Corporation or the Apache Foundation.

Hi Yev,
If there's a volunteer maintainer that will support it for at least the
next year,
I'm fine with it going into the main repo, its an interesting test case.
However
if no volunteer, lets just keep it in your repo. We need to set up an SPDX
attic
and move out the projects with no assignment/non responsive maintainers.

Thanks for holding off on merging the commons clause until after the bakeoff.
I agree its a logical candidate to go into that project. ;-)

Hi, Kate,

I think there’s value in adding a commons

to the license of AppBomination, because nothing lives up to the project’s
name better. Given the proximity of the bake-off, I can do it on a branch, but
I think it should definitely be merged soon.

Also, since I won’t be a regular contributor on SPDX henceforth, would someone
like to take over the AppBomination
repository<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__github.com_yevster_App-2DBOM-2Dination_&d=DwMGaQ&c=DPL6_X_6JkXFx7AXWqB0tg&r=QOxMDNgQUmsAYCICUk0FE-zq3xpALP5pPMHZ2EBKhJM&m=2FDx4b9v-qWIwZRdvdJdkYeVgVhC3rmH3OrHnpNveFs&s=la3aRHowSzeBcRttLk3wXHbXLXlJ7-OBCtWt_htTj1E&e=>?
Perhaps move it to the SPDX github?

Thanks
