We implemented such system in Spectra 1.0.1 which we still using.
We have 2 servers: staging and production. All the editorial work (driven by workflow)
goes on staging server.
When workflow reaches its pinnacle and publishing is needed, we publish content on an
object level, or container level, or page level.
There is no implementation for sections, because it's too chunky. If user has
Publisher rights, design mode will display a little button
alongside a container to publish it (namely to send this container with all content
objects, rules, handlers and type definitions, if needed, to
production server. Similar process is there for publishing objects and/or pages.
Publishing pages is a lot more complex, as
page needs to be registered in sitecomposition withing certain section, plus all the
containers and containerdescriptors. But it works
nicely. And it provides greater flexibility for staff to go and stage the content,
preview it and approve without changing anything on live server.
When content gets published, it's automatically archived in separate Archive database,
with possible retrieval of any previous version.

I'm in the process of trying to set up an article publication system and
have run into this problem: We need to be able to edit content that is
already live on the system, but not make it live until after editorial
approval. Added into this is the need to have all of these articles
versioned. Apparently I was mistaken in thinking that Spectra would handle
most of these things automatically, but it now appears that this all must be
designed from the ground up. Is this correct? If it is, does anyone have any
suggestions about how to implement this in the best way? Also, are there any
improvements concerning this in 1.5.1? Thanks in advance.
