Or to put it another way, compare your potential earning power if you had
the same level of skill with J2EE/JSP/JRun. Currently on www.jobserve.co.uk
a search for "Spectra" & "London" returns a whopping 1 result. The same
search using "JSP" returns 431 results. You do the math.

And ColdFusion skills, as much as I appreciate them, are not nearly as
transferrable as Java, C++, PHP or even (shudder) ASP.

I, too, have hopes that Spectra experience will boost my resume and earnings
potential. However, I think it's more realistic to consider Spectra an extension of
your ColdFusion skills. Back in August 2000, Allaire announced "more than 400"
Spectra customers and 70 live sites. That's not much from a job search perspective
and I bet Allaire hoped for bigger sales.

I have no doubt that CF is still the underdog vs. ASP or others. Macromedia's a smart
company that's continued to reposition itself through acquisitions and changing its
product line. I expect CF's base will only grow under their care.

With Spectra being a more expensive, lower volume product, it makes sense to
effectively broaden its use and lower its price by rolling it into the next CF server.
Plus that fits with MM's and Allaire's philosophy of easing development for everyone.
Spectra, as it stands, has a limited reach.

Bottom line, I think Spectra skills will pay. Not yet but soon. We're in an awkward
period.
