Virtual Residency
+++ a call for a virtual migration to the model house Europe +++
We are looking for artistic concepts for installations which are
concerned with
the complex theme of ‚Migration‘, be it direct or indirect and would like to
invite artists of any kind (media artists, painters, sculptors etc. just
to name
a few) to participate in the project.
Submission from 1 May 2006 to 15 August 2007.
(The database can be accessed for 15 months.)
Residency, residence, resident – habitation, life, resident in,
residence permit…
A state of personal and collective destabilization, chaotic change,
emptiness…
creative transit…
... clearly an extensive topic – what will happen before and after a
stay or the
issuing of a residence permit? Who (or what) entitles a person to settle
down
somewhere else and what motivates people to do so? What inner processes
drive
people to change?
The project Virtual Residency calls for an artistic migration and provides
places of residence to the resulting ideas, concepts and images in the World
Wide Web and at real places in the form of exhibitions in Germany, Poland,
France and Luxembourg.
All the artistic concepts, which have been submitted, will be presented
at the
four exhibitions. About ten works (at each location) will be realized as
media
installations in the different institutions. All necessary material will
be paid
for by the Virtual Residency. A comprehensive and multilingual catalogue
of each
exhibition will be published.

Conditions for entry:
If you would like to participate in the Virtual Residency just click on new
registration and register. Your concept and the corresponding image video or
sound files can be entered into a database. (Menu item NEW
REGISTRATION). Please
enter all concepts and other data in English as well.
Information about yourself (how you look like, social environment,
biography) is
welcome!
You will be notified immediately, should your concept be chosen by the
project
team or the European partner institutions. In order to secure a professional
implementation of your concept, the organizers will be in contact with
you to
discuss any technical details regarding the exhibition of your work.

Timetable:
The Virtual Residency project starts on 1 May 2006 and ends in December
2007.
On 1 May 2006 the first call for the participation in the project will be

The database of the Virtual Residency will remain accessible until 15
August 2007.
Artists who would like to take part in the first exhibition in Poland
can enter
their concepts into the database until 6 August 2006.
The first exhibition will open at the Galeria Biala, Centrum Kultury in
Lublin,
Poland on 6 October 2006.
The exhibition will run from 7 October to 27 October 2006.
Artists who would like to take part in the second exhibition in Germany can

all the
‘’Model house’’ exhibitions that had been held in the partner countries.
SHORT CONCEPT:
Virtual Residency + + + a call for a virtual migration to the model

The dramatic European transformation processes of the last fifteen years
have
been the catalyst for the multimedia and exhibition project the Virtual
Residency of the media artists Monika Bohr, Claudia Brieske, Leslie
Huppert and
Gertrud Riethmüller.
The project group is calling on artists world wide to participate in a
virtual
‘’migration’’. The project initiates a creative transit of images,
motives and
concepts through the World Wide Web to real exhibition venues in Europe.
The artistic experiment the Virtual Residency uses the examination of the
states of personal and collective destabilization as the actual,
powerful engine
of the migration movements. Hope, fear, dreams, necessities, distress
and the
wish and the will for change generate individual images. They are examples,
‘’samples’’ or patterns for migration motives. Through the virtual
projection
screen of the project, its Internet platform, they receive a direction, they
will be made visible and find a domicile. There, on behalf of their
creators,
they become virtual residents.
The project group will then enable a part of the virtual residents to
materialize their ideas and concepts in reality. Based on the ‘’sample
character’’ of the concepts that had been submitted to the Virtual
Residency,
the group has developed an approach to realize the ideas as real multimedia
installations in various exhibitions in Europe, so called ‘’model
houses’’. One
associates the term ‘’model house’’ with a collective image of the
paradise. It
is a pure place, a white place, a vessel, at the same time a ‘’void’’, a
‘’blank
space’’, a place without it’s own character, without personality. Thus, the
‘’model house’’ will be the ideal projection screen for migration
motives. Model
houses will be created from October 2006 in Germany, France, Poland and
Luxembourg.
The Virtual Residency is being supported amongst other sponsors by the
organizers of the Luxembourg and Greater Region European Capital of
Culture 2007
project, as well as the Ministry of Education and Culture of the
Saarland, the
office of the plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany
(Saarland) and
other sponsors and partners. The project executing organization is the
HBK Saar
- School of Fine Arts, Saarbrücken.

...eine umfassende Thematik, denn was kommt vor und nach einem
Aufenthalt, einer
Aufenthaltsgenehmigung? Was (oder wer) berechtigt einen Menschen, sich
an einem
anderen Ort niederzulassen und welche Motive veranlassen sie oder ihn, es zu
versuchen? Welches sind die inneren Prozesse, die die Menschen dazu
treiben sich
zu verändern?
Das Projekt Virtual Residency ruft zu künstlerischen
Migrationsbewegungen auf
und stellt den daraus entstehenden Ideen, Konzepten und Bildern
„Aufenthaltsorte“ im World Wide Web und an realen Orten in Form von
Ausstellungen in Deutschland, Polen, Frankreich und Luxemburg zur
Verfügung.
Alle eingereichten künstlerischen Konzeptionen werden in den vier
Ausstellungen
vorgestellt. Etwa zehn Arbeiten (pro Ort) werden jeweils in Form von
Medieninstallationen in den verschiedenen Institutionen realisiert. Alle
Materialkosten werden von der Virtual Residency übernommen. Es wird zu jedem
Ausstellungsort ein umfassender, mehrsprachiger Katalog veröffentlicht.

im Rahmen des Projektes Luxemburg und Großregion - Europäische
Kulturhauptstadt

stattfinden. Hier wird ein Überblick über alle bisher in den Partnerländern
realisierten „Musterhäuser“ (Ausstellungen) gezeigt.

Die tiefgreifenden europäischen Transformationsprozesse der letzten 15 Jahre
sind inhaltlicher Auslöser für das Multimedia- und Ausstellungsprojekt
Virtual
Residency der Medienkünstlerinnen Monika Bohr, Claudia Brieske, Leslie
Huppert
und Gertrud Riethmüller.
Die Projektgruppe schickt einen Aufruf zu einer virtuellen
"Völkerwanderung" an
alle Künstlerinnen und Künstler der Welt. Das Projekt initiiert einen
kreativen
Transit von Bildern, Motiven und Konzepten durch das World Wide Web hin zu
realen Ausstellungsorten in Europa.
Das künstlerische Experiment Virtual Residency untersucht die Zustände
persönlicher und kollektiver Destabilisierung als eigentlichen, kraftvollen
Motor der Migrationsströme: Hoffnung, Angst, Träume, Zwänge, Not, Wunsch
nach
Veränderung, Wille zum Wandel generieren individuelle Bilder. Sie sind
Beispiele, "samples" oder Muster für Migrationsmotive. Durch die virtuelle
Projektionsfläche des Projekts, seine Internetplattform, ihrem Peilsender,
erhalten sie eine Richtung, werden sichtbar gemacht und finden einen
Aufenthaltsort. Dort werden sie stellvertretend für ihre Autoren zu
virtuellen
Residenten.
In einem zweiten Schritt ermöglicht die Projektgruppe einem Teil der
virtuellen
Residenten eine Materialisierung ihrer Ideen und Konzepte im realen Raum.
Ausgehend vom "Mustercharakter" der in der Virtual Residency eingegangenen
Konzepte, entwickelte die Gruppe den Ansatz, die Ideen als reale
multimediale
Installationen in verschiedenen Ausstellungen in Europa, sogenannten
"Musterhäusern", umzusetzen. Der Begriff "Musterhaus" assoziiert eine
kollektive
Paradiesvorstellung. Es ist ein reiner Ort, ein weißer Ort, ein Gefäß,
gleichzeitig ein "void", ein "blank space", also ein Ort ohne eigenen
Charakter,
ohne Persönlichkeit. Das "Musterhaus" wird so zur idealen
Projektionsfläche für
Migrationsmotive. Musterhäuser entstehen ab Oktober 2006 in Deutschland,
Frankreich, Polen und Luxemburg.
Virtual Residency wird von der Projektgruppe Bohr, Brieske, Huppert und
Riethmüller in Zusammenarbeit mit der Galerie Biala in Lublin (PL), der
Galerie
Faux Mouvement, Centre d'Art Contemporain in Metz (F) und dem Casino
Luxemburg
Forum d'art contemporain in Luxemburg (L) veranstaltet.
Unterstützt wird Virtual Residency unter anderem vom ZKM in Karlsruhe,
von dem
Projekt Luxemburg und Großregion - Europäische Kulturhauptstadt 2007,
sowie dem
Ministerium für Bildung und Kultur des Saarlandes, dem Büro des
Bevollmächtigten

Tous ces termes renvoient à une thématique riche et complexe qui soulève de
nombreuses questions. En effet, de quoi sont faits l’avant et l’après d’un
séjour, d’une autorisation de séjour ? Qu’est-ce qui (ou qui) donne le
droit à
une personne de s’installer à un autre endroit et quelles raisons
l’incitent à
faire ce pas ? Quels processus intérieurs amènent un individu à vouloir
changer ?
L’objectif du projet Virtual Residency est d’inviter aux mouvements
migratoires
artistiques. Il présente les idées, concepts et images relatifs aux «
lieux de
séjour » sous forme d’expositions virtuelles sur la Toile ou d’expositions
réelles se tenant en Allemagne, en Pologne, en France et au Luxembourg.
L’ensemble des concepts artistiques proposés sera présenté à l’occasion de
quatre expositions. Pour chaque exposition, dix concepts (par site) seront
réalisés sous forme d’installations multimédias au sein des différentes
institutions. Virtual Residency prend en charge la totalité des coûts
matériels.
Un catalogue détaillé et traduit en plusieurs langues accompagnera
chacune des
expositions.

La cérémonie de clôture provisoire de l’ensemble du projet est prévue pour
décembre 2007 et se tiendra, dans le cadre du projet « Luxembourg et Grande
région - Capitale Européenne de la Culture 2007 », au Casino Luxembourg
- Forum
d’art contemporain dans la ville de Luxembourg. Elle aura pour but
d’offrir un
aperçu de l’ensemble des « maisons-témoins » (expositions) réalisées
jusqu’alors
dans les pays partenaires.
SYNTHÈSE:
Virtual Residency
+ + + Appel à une migration virtuelle des peuples dans la maison modèle
Europe

La matière des profonds processus de transformation de ces quinze dernières
années en Europe a été l’élément déclencheur du projet multimédia et
d’exposition Virtual Residency, dirigé par Monika Bohr, Claudia Brieske,
Leslie
Huppert et Gertrud Riethmüller, artistes multimédia.
Le groupe lance un appel à une « migration virtuelle des peuples » à
destination
des artistes du monde entier. Le projet procède à un transit d’images,
de thèmes
et de concepts par le biais du Web mondial, jusqu’à des lieux
d’exposition en
Europe.
L’expérimentation artistique de Virtual Residency étudie les situations de
déstabilisation personnelle et collective, jouant un rôle de moteur
effectif et
puissant des courants migratoires : l’espoir, la peur, les rêves, les
contraintes, la nécessité, le désir de changement et la volonté de
transformation engendrent des images individuelles. Ce sont des
exemples, des «
samples » ou des modèles de thèmes migratoires. Grâce à la surface de
projection
virtuelle du projet et à sa plateforme Internet, les images acquièrent une
orientation, deviennent visibles et trouvent leur lieu d’exposition. Là, se
substituant à leurs auteurs, elles deviennent des résidents virtuels.
Dans un second temps, le groupe permet à une partie des résidents
virtuels de
matérialiser leurs idées et leurs concepts dans un espace réel. En se
basant sur
le « caractère modèle » des concepts entrés dans la Virtual Residency,
le groupe
a développé une approche visant à transformer les idées en installations
multimédia réelles dans différents lieux d’exposition en Europe proclamés «
maison modèle » . La notion de « maison modèle » est associée à une vision
collective du paradis. C’est un lieu pur, un lieu blanc, un réceptacle, à la
fois un « vide », un « espace blanc », c’est-à-dire un lieu sans
caractère, sans
personnalité. La « maison modèle » devient ainsi une surface de projection
idéale pour des thèmes migratoires. Les « maisons modèles » verront le
jour à
partir d’octobre 2006 en Allemagne, en France, en Pologne et au Luxembourg.
Virtual Residency est soutenu notamment par le ZKM (Centre des arts et des
médias) de Karlsruhe, par le projet Luxembourg et Grande Région – Capitale
européenne de la culture 2007 ainsi que par le ministère de la Formation
et de
la Culture de la Sarre, le bureau du Plénipotentiaire (Sarre) et d’autres
sponsors et partenaires.
L’école supérieure des beaux-arts de la Sarre, coordonne ce projet.
