It is an instinct to survive, to resist through culture, literature, music and highlighting woman’s impact in society. For the first time a film festival in Lebanon has been able to assemble different players from each country, particularly from universities and institutions (Embassies, Ministries, Institutes) from both Asia and Europe. It has been supported by a remarkable national and international solidarity, in the dramatic context of what the city of Tripoli is experiencing, as much as the entire country. ====> Second action : Niemeyer Contest : Competition Lebanon counts two uncompleted monuments. Baalbek which dates back to Roman times, and the Niemeyer City constructed by the celebrated Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer in the 70′s and was interrupted by the Lebanese civil war. An international competition of films will be launched based on the architectural complex constructed by Niemeyer and which still carries the name of Tripoli’s Rachid Karame Fair.. The competition will be announced at the opening ceremony of the Festival, and on internet. It will offer each candidate the possibility of making a film which should capture the spirit of the city built by Oscar Niemeyer in Tripoli in the context of world architecture. The duration of each film can be from one minute to one hour and twenty minutes. The format is open: documentary, fiction, animation, photographic creation, video-art, installation, etc…. The aim of this open call is to bring this monument back to life and which can help to launch a big Art Biennale, thus placing the city of Tripoli, thousands of years old, on the map of cities dedicated to art and culture. The winning ilms, will be screened on internet and will be presented the site itself of the the city of Niemeyer in Tripoli, during the second Tripoli International Film Festival. ===> Guest honor of the festival : Aruna Vasudev (India) In the presence of Aruna Vasudev, guest of honor of the festival, who will present the Life Achievement Award, price Aruna Vasudev. Cultural Resistance deliberately chose challenging conventions this year to celebrate the centenary of Indian cinema. If usually the old traditional films and Bollywood are honored, the festival has chosen to focus on the younger generation advanced with two exceptional films : the first is Ship of Thesus directed by Anand Gandhi, a thirty years old stage director and writer. Already famous throughout India for his screenplays for television series and the price he received, he signs here a wonderful film that tells a long story in the manner of 1001 Nights, but deals with a subject of a burning issue : using the theme of organ transplantation to question the metaphysical relationship that we have with our body, he wondered about the human being and its difference with others. If I see the world with other eyes than mine, am I still the same person ? I met Anand Gandhi as he spoke of his film. For him, thinking about this is a tribute to the ship of Theseus, this thought experiment that, from Antiquity to Leibniz, question the problem of the Same and the Other, identity and persistence over time. Maintenance of the ship of Theseus implies that it changes in some parts, and if it provokes a change of identity, does it remain the same boat? Treated to Eastern, well structured, this film offers us the opportunity of an unusual reflection which should be continued. Salma is the film of a woman, Kim Longinotto, which tells the extraordinary story of a greatest poet of South India, locked for twenty- five to be born a woman. Reaching with the complicity of the jailer to get her texts on pieces of toilet paper or paper bags, she could send her poetry through the world. Without keeping any hatred against traditions which locked her, she finds a way to be free by the words of poetry. This documentary, treated as a fiction, is an important document to understand, through this fervent activist and campaigner for women’s rights and education who was Salma, how it is useless to resist by violence : culture has its price. We would have liked Kim Longinotto with us, but the festival has been sponsored with very few resources, and was an act of resistance when the war threatened the region and the country, so it was difficult to make everyone come. Directors’ solidarity was there, but the funds to bring them remained absent. The evening dedicated to the centenary will be held on Saturday, November 16 at the Metropolis in Beirut and Tripoli CityComplex at 8pm . - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - https://www.facebook.com/TripolINTFilmFestLebanon?fref=ts http://culturalresistance.org/festival-international-des-cinemas-dasie-de-vesoul-fica/ Filiations https://www.newtactics.org/conversation/cultural-resistance-arts-protest http://www.criticalsecret.net/-2013-olivier-hadouchi-carnet-de-mars-avril_notebooks-of-march-april%2c043-.html ______________________________________________ SPECTRE list for media culture in Deep Europe Info, archive and help: http://post.in-mind.de/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/spectre
