======== SUMMARY AND THEME ========

In the last decade Do-It-Yourself (DIY) and Maker cultures - the former a
culture of building artefacts by oneself, and the latter the culture of
"making" things on one's spare time, often by modifying existing technologies -
have become widespread in North America. When communities adopt DIY and Maker
cultures they are empowered with tools to modify and build the spaces that
support their existence. This raises fascinating questions:

- Can a DIY third place exist, and which technologies can be used to create
one?
- How can an existing third place be "hacked" to support a new community?
- How can urban communities use DIY and Maker cultures to build a third place?

The Second Workshop on Human Computer Interaction for Third Places (HCI3P) aims
at provide a hands-on forum to discuss the roles of interactive technologies,
particularly under a DIY and Maker approach, in the shaping of the third places
of the future.

======== TOPICS OF INTEREST ========

HCI-3P will focus on the following topics, but similar topics and discussions
will be welcomed for submission and discussion during the workshop.

- Novel interfaces to support human interaction in third places
- Natural and unobtrusive interfaces to support conversation within third places
- Aesthetic approaches to public interfaces within third places
- Crowd-computing in third places
- Comparison of third places with different cultural rootings
- Supporting third places in special communities (e.g. nomad, non-technical)
- Virtual or hybrid (virtual/face-to-face) third places
- Computing for third places in the developing world
- Theoretical discussions on ICT supported third places
- Participatory design for third places

======== GOALS AND EXPECTED AUDIENCE ========

To promote tangible outcomes HCI3P will aim to attract members of the HCI
community, artists, designers, architects, members of local communities, Makers
and DIY activists. Furthermore, the workshop will be designed as a two day
event. On the first day authors will present their submitted research or
position on DIY and Maker third places, which will serve to guide an ending
discussion on the topic of the workshop. The second day will be a hands-on
event in the form of a "hackathon", where participants will have a chance to
collaboratively create a low or medium fidelity prototype. Workshop outcomes
will include a prototype and a possible journal submission outlining the
workshop discussion and lessons learned.

======== SUBMISSION FORMAT ========

Workshop candidates are requested to submit a position paper, no longer than 6
pages in the CHI extended abstract format, about their research and link to the
workshop theme as email attachment to [email protected].

Paper template: http://chi2013.acm.org/authors/format/

Participants will be selected on the basis of the relevance of their work and
interests and familiarity with the HCI3P 2014 workshop topics by the Technical
Program Committee.
