** FIBER & STEIM present: the first Dutch AlgoRave ------------------------------------------------------------
** Live coding for the dance floor ------------------------------------------------------------ On Saturday 22 March, FIBER (http://www.fiber-space.nl) and STEIM ( http://www.steim.org) join forces to present the Netherlands' very first Algorave (http://www.codedmatters.nl/event/algorave) (Algorithmic Rave). We're very proud to be the first Dutch hosts of this event, so we decided to flesh it out to make a three day event: in addition to the party on Saturday 22, we're also organising two SuperCollider workshops (on Friday 21 and Saturday 22) and a small symposium (on Sunday 23). More about that in a bit! First things first: just what exactly is an Algorave? If you're not quite familiar with the concept, allow us to explain: the Algorave brings the cerebral world of live coding and the dirty dancing of raves together to form a new wave in club culture in which performers improvise their music live on stage by writing and re-writing code. No producers, no DJ's, no decks, no limits! If you're looking for a new kind of raw, unpredictable night of dirty industrial techno sounds and truly live electronic music: this is it. After its birth only three years ago, the Algorave scene has been popping up all over the world, spawning parties from Great Britain to Mexico, and has since been featured in popular media such as BoingBoing ( http://boingboing.net/2013/05/11/algoraves-dancing-to-algorith.html) , Dazed Digital ( http://www.dazeddigital.com/artsandculture/article/16150/1/what-on-earth-is-livecoding) , Wired (http://www.wired.co.uk/magazine/archive/2013/09/play/algorave) , Vice ( http://www.vice.com/en_uk/read/algorave-is-the-future-of-dance-music-if-youre-an-html-coder) and even on the Dutch news programme NOS op 3 ( http://nos.nl/op3/video/580850-algorave-dansen-op-software.html) . Algoraves embrace the alien sounds of raves from the past, and introduce futuristic rhythms and beats made through strange, algorithm-aided processes. It's up to the good people on the dance floor to help the musicians make sense of this and do the real creative work in making a great party by providing the energy for the party. To properly introduce this new movement on Dutch ground, FIBER and STEIM have brought in Alex McLean, the founder of the scene himself, and with him some of the biggest current names in the Algorave scene: Alex McLean and Matthew Yee-King will be headlining as Canute ( http://www.codedmatters.nl/artist/canute/) , a live coding vs live drumming project, Luuma (http://www.codedmatters.nl/artist/luuma/) brings his own custom-made software and controllers, other names include Exoterrism ( http://www.codedmatters.nl/artist/exoterrism/) (BE), Shelly Knotts ( http://www.codedmatters.nl/artist/shelly-knotts/) (UK) and The Void Pointers (http://www.codedmatters.nl/artist/void-pointers/) (NL). Introduction to live coding in SuperCollider (Friday 21 March) Want to get into coding sound, but never knew how to take the step? Perhaps you have been coding in languages such as Max/MSP or PureData and want to learn SuperCollider as well? Or you might want to start learning from scratch without any previous experience with coding? This is your chance! Advanced SuperCollider & Live Instruments (Saturday 22 March) This workshop is for those who are interested in combining code with live instruments. Different approaches will be discussed. The topics of effects, live sampling, onset detection, beat detection and markov chains will be covered, among other things. Mini-Symposium (Sunday 23 March) The day after the event a small symposium will take place we will reflect on the phenomena of 'live coding' and 'algorave' in today's cultural landscape.
