*VIDEONALE.17 – Call for Entries: REFRACTED REALITIES*
Die 17. Ausgabe der Videonale findet vom 21. Februar bis 14. April 2019
im Kunstmuseum Bonn statt.
Die Videonale lädt Künstler*innen weltweit ein, ihre Werke für den
Wettbewerb der VIDEONALE.17 – Festival für Video und zeitbasierte
Kunstformen zum Thema „REFRACTED REALITIES (Gebrochene Wirklichkeiten)“
einzusenden. Die von einer internationalen Jury ausgewählten Werke
werden in der Ausstellung im Kunstmuseum Bonn zu sehen sein. Die
Arbeiten werden in der Ausstellung als Einzelpräsentationen gezeigt. Die
Eröffnung der Ausstellung wird begleitet durch ein umfangreiches
viertägiges Festivalprogramm mit Panels, Vorträgen, Künstlergesprächen,
Performances, Workshops und Masterclasses.
Unter allen für die Ausstellung ausgewählten Arbeiten wird der mit 5.000
Euro dotierte Videonale Preis der fluentum collection vergeben.

*THEMA*
In der Optik bezeichnet „Refraktion“ die Brechung von Lichtwellen, im
Sinne einer graduellen Ablenkung, in dem Moment, in dem die Welle von
einem Medium auf ein anderes Medium übergeht. Durch die Brechung
verändert sich die Richtung der Welle und damit die Wahrnehmung dessen,
was durch das Licht sichtbar gemacht wird. Die optische Ablenkung
fordert uns somit auf, unseren Blick immer wieder zu korrigieren,
Ausgangs- und Endpunkt unserer Wahrnehmung mit der Realität abzugleichen
und das Objekt der Anschauung klar zu fokussieren.
Refraktion im übertragenen Sinne meint ein kritisches Reflektieren über
die Mittel und Wege der Sichtbarmachung und folglich die Option einer
Reartikulation unserer Sicht auf die Dinge, wie sie sind, waren oder
vermeintlich immer schon gewesen sind. Das technische Medium der
Kameralinse, das sich regelmäßig zwischen uns und unsere Wahrnehmung
schaltet, nimmt in diesem Kontext eine besondere Rolle ein, als es den
Grad der Refraktion entscheidend beeinflusst. Es vermag, die Wellen in
eine Richtung zu bündeln oder aber sie abzulenken und neu auszurichten.
Es kann der alten Erzählung neue Bilder hinzufügen oder eine neue
Erzählung mit neuen Bildern etablieren.
Welche Möglichkeiten haben die Medien im Allgemeinen und die
künstlerischen Medien im Besonderen, um sich kritisch mit der eigenen
Dominanz auseinanderzusetzen? Welche künstlerischen Strategien werden
aktuell entwickelt, um alternative Blicke zu ermöglichen und neue
Perspektiven zu integrieren? Welche Bildsprachen bieten sich hierfür an?
Wir suchen Arbeiten, die sich kritisch und spekulativ, produktiv und
destruktiv, paradox und disruptiv mit der Sprache des technischen
Mediums selbst, wie mit den politischen, kulturellen und
gesellschaftlichen Erzählungen, die es fokussiert, auseinandersetzen.
Wir suchen Arbeiten, die alternative Lesarten zu dominanten
Kategorisierungen entwickeln und einladen, den Gegenstand ihrer
Betrachtung neu oder anders in den Blick zu nehmen.

*REGELN*
Zum Wettbewerb eingeladen sind Künstler*innen jeglicher Nationalität und
jeglichen Alters mit Arbeiten aus den Bereichen Einkanal- und
Mehrkanalvideo, Videoinstallation/-skulptur, Virtual Reality und
Performance. Es gibt keine Einschränkung in Bezug auf die Dauer der
eingesandten Arbeit. Die eingesandte Arbeit darf jedoch nicht älter als
zwei Jahre sein (entstanden nach dem 1.1.2016). Pro Künstler*in ist nur
eine Einsendung zugelassen.

Im Anschluss an die Ausstellung im Kunstmuseum Bonn werden die Arbeiten
der VIDEONALE.17 in weiteren internationalen Institutionen gezeigt.
Arbeiten vergangener VIDEONALEN waren u.a. im Central House of Artists,
Moskau / Russland, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in Taichung /
Taiwan, Insa Art Space, Seoul / Korea, Nationalgalerie von
Bosnien-Herzegowina / Sarajewo, MONA Inner Spaces, Poznan / Polen,
ArtVilnius, Vilnius / Litauen, CCA/Freedom Park, Lagos / Nigeria zu sehen.
*DIE VIDEONALE *
Die Videonale, 1984 in Bonn gegründet, ist die internationale Plattform
für Video und zeitbasierte Kunstformen. Mit einer Ausstellung aus den
Einsendungen zum Wettbewerb und einem Festivalprogramm bildet sie seit
inzwischen über 30 Jahren neueste Entwicklungen im Bereich des bewegten
Bildes und der zeitbasierten Künste ab. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf jungen
internationalen künstlerischen Positionen, flankiert durch etablierte
Vertreter*innen der Bewegtbildkunst. Zu Ausstellung und Festivalprogramm
erwartet die Videonale regelmäßig nationales und internationales
Fachpublikum und bietet an den vier auf die Eröffnung folgenden
Festivaltagen eine Plattform für einen intensiven Austausch zum Thema
Bewegtbild und zeitbasierte Kunst.

*VIDEONALE.17 – Call for Entries: REFRACTED REALITIES*
From February 21 to April 14, 2019 the 17^th edition of Videonale will
take place at Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany.
The Videonale invites artists from around the world to submit their work
for the competition section of VIDEONALE.17 – Festival for Video and
Time-Based Arts on the theme REFRACTED REALITIES. Entries selected by
our international jury will be presented at an exhibition at the
Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany. All works will be presented as individual
presentations in the exhibition. The opening is accompanied by an
extensive four day festival program, featuring panels, lectures,
discussions with the artists, performances, workshops and master classes.
One of the works selected for the exhibition will receive the Videonale
Award of the fluentum collection, including 5,000 euros prize money.

*THEME*
In optics, “refraction” refers to the bending of a beam of light, a
change in direction which occurs at the moment when it passes from one
medium to another. Through refraction, the light wave alters course,
changing the way we perceive the objects it illuminates in the process.
This optical deviation requires us to repeatedly correct our gaze,
comparing the beginning and end points of our perception with reality,
and bringing the object we see clearly into focus.
In its figurative sense, refraction refers to a critical reflection on
the means and channels of visualization, and by extension the
possibility of a rearticulation of our view of things – how they are,
were, or apparently always have been. The technical medium of the camera
lens, which frequently mediates between us and the things we perceive,
plays a central role here, since it significantly influences the degree
of refraction. It can act to concentrate light waves in a single
direction, or to deflect and realign them. It can provide new images for
old narratives, or create new narratives with new images. What
possibilities exist to allow media in general, and artistic media in
particular, to engage critically with their own dominance? What artistic
strategies are currently being developed to create alternative points of
view, and to integrate new perspectives? Which visual languages are
available to the artist?
We are looking for works which confront the language of the technical
medium critically and speculatively, productively and destructively,
paradoxically and disruptively, calling into question the political,
cultural and social narratives which it creates. We are looking for
works which develop alternatives to the dominant categories, allowing us
to see objects in a new or different light.

*RULES*
All types of experimental moving-image-based works (single and
multi-channel video, video installation and Virtual Reality projects) as
well as performance projects can be submitted to the competition. There
are no restrictions on the duration of the work submitted, on the
geographical location of the artist, or on their age. The work submitted
may, however, not be more than two years old (i.e. it must have been
produced after 1/1/2016). Each artist must not submit more than one work.

The competition of VIDEONALE.17 is open for all types of experimental
moving-image-based works from the categories

*VIDEONALE ON TOUR*
Following the exhibition in the Kunstmuseum Bonn, the works displayed at
VIDEONALE.17 will be presented in other international institutions as
“VIDEONALE.17 on tour”. Works from previous Videonales could be seen at
the Central House of Artists in Moscow, Russia, at the National Taiwan
Museum of Fine Arts in Taichung, Taiwan, at the Insa Art Space in Seoul,
Korea, at the National Gallery of Bosnia-Herzegovina in Sarajevo, at
MONA Inner Spaces in Poznan, Poland, at ArtVilnius, Lithuania, at CCA/
Freedom Park Lagos, Nigeria and others.
*THE VIDEONALE *
Founded in 1984 in Bonn, the Videonale is an international platform for
video and time-based arts. With an exhibition of works submitted for
competition as well as a festival program, it has been presenting the
latest developments in moving image and time based arts for over 30
years. The focus is on young international artists, complemented by
established representatives of moving image art. The exhibition and
festival program regularly attract a national and international audience
of specialists, and the four day festival which follows the opening
offers a platform for an intensive exchange of ideas on the theme of
moving image and time based art forms.
