"Art in Networks: The GDR and its Global Relations" ist eine digitale
Forschungsplattform zu den internationalen Kontakten der DDR in der
Kunst. Das Projekt macht die Verbindungen von Künstler:innen,
Architekt:innen, Museen und anderen kulturellen Akteur:innen zwischen
der DDR und Ländern in Afrika, Asien und Lateinamerika sichtbar und
spürt den dabei entstandenen globalen Netzwerken nach. An einzelnen
Fallbeispielen wird untersucht, wie Formen des privaten und
institutionellen künstlerischen Austauschs gestaltet wurden. Inwiefern
haben sich kulturpolitische Beziehungen materialisiert? Wo lagen die
Grenzen des offiziellen Austauschs innerhalb der politischen
Rahmenbedingungen? Wie wurden sie mitunter im Privaten überschritten? Wo
finden sich bis heute Spuren dieser Kontakte?
Anhand von Videointerviews mit Zeitzeug:innen werden auf der Plattform
"Art in Networks" persönliche Erinnerungen zu Studienaufenthalten,
Auslandsreisen, Ausstellungen und anderen Formen des Austauschs
erlebbar. So spricht zum Beispiel der Leipziger Fotograf Harald
Kirschner über seine Serie "Syrien 1986", die während einer Reise im
Auftrag des Verbands Bildender Künstler entstand, und die kubanische
Künstlerin Teresa Casanueva erzählt, wie sie als Studentin an die Burg
Giebichenstein in Halle kam. Der Künstler Abed Abdi, der aus Haifa an
die Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Dresden kam, berichtet von seiner
Mitarbeit an dem bekannten Wandbild "Der Weg der Roten Fahne" am
Kulturpalast in Dresden. Internationaler Austausch außerhalb
staatlicher Strukturen wie in der Mail Art wird ebenfalls angesprochen,
etwa im Interview mit dem Psychoanalytiker und Mail Artisten Lutz
Wohlrab. Auch Reiseverbote und politisch verhinderte internationale
Kooperationen werden auf der Plattform thematisiert. So zeigt Ulrike
Zille abgelehnte Reiseanträge ihres Vaters, des Malers Rainer Zille, und
die Historikerin Ellen Pupeter erklärt, wie die DDR Restitutionsgesuche
für Kulturgüter bürokratisch verschleppte. Die Interviews zeugen von
vergangenen transnationalen Kunstgeschichten, aber auch von der
Fortdauer der Relationen, der Bezugnahmen und der affektiven Bindungen
nach dem Ende der DDR sowie ihrer Relevanz für die zeitgenössische
Einordnung. Ergänzend zu den Zeitzeug:inneninterviews kommen
Expert:innen zu Wort, um internationale und interdisziplinäre
wissenschaftliche Diskurse im Themenkomplex aufzuzeigen. Ein digitales
Fellowshipprogramm führte zu einer Reihe von internationalen Gastbeiträgen.
Mit der Forschungsplattform wird eine breit angelegte transkulturelle
Perspektive auf die künstlerische Produktion in der DDR etabliert, die
unbekannte Freiräume ebenso wie Einschränkungen des Kontakts über
eurozentristische Narrative hinaus beleuchtet. Dabei wird subjektiven
und teilweise widersprüchlichen Perspektiven Raum gegeben. Die Plattform
ist durch eine interaktive Timeline strukturiert, auf der Beiträge und
Videos zu einzelnen Ereignissen des internationalen künstlerischen
Austauschs verzeichnet sind und einen Überblick bieten. Sie wird stetig
ergänzt und erweitert und ist offen für Anregungen und Kommentare.
"Art in Networks" begann im Februar 2022 als eine aus dem Europäischen
Sozialfonds geförderte Nachwuchsforscherinnengruppe am Institut für
Kunst- und Musikwissenschaft der Technischen Universität Dresden. Sie
wird geleitet von Kerstin Schankweiler, Professorin für Bildwissenschaft
im globalen Kontext. Die wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiterinnen sind
Pauline Hohn, Nora Kaschuba, Jule Lagoda und Elke Neumann.

"Art in Networks. The GDR and its Global Relations" is a digital
platform for research on the international contacts of the GDR in the
field of visual arts. The project makes visible the connections between
artists, architects, museums and other cultural actors in the GDR and
countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and traces the global
networks that emerged in the process. Individual case studies are used
to examine how forms of private and institutional artistic exchange were
shaped. How did cultural-political relationships materialize? Where did
the boundaries of official exchange lie within the political framework,
and how were they sometimes transgressed in private? Where can traces of
these contacts still be found today?
Personal memories of study visits, trips abroad, exhibitions and other
forms of exchange can be experienced on the "Art in Networks" platform
through video interviews with contemporary witnesses. For example, the
photographer Harald Kirschner from Leipzig talks about his series "Syria
1986," which was created during a trip commissioned by the GDR’s
Association of Visual Artists, and the Cuban artist Teresa Casanueva
tells how she came to the Burg Giebichenstein in Halle as a student. The
artist Abed Abdi, who came to the Dresden University of Fine Arts from
Haifa, recalls his involvement with the famous mural "The Path of the
Red Flag" at the Kulturpalast in Dresden. International exchange outside
of state structures, as in mail art, is also addressed, for instance in
the interview with the psychoanalyst and mail artist Lutz Wohlrab.
Travel bans and international collaborations which were prevented
politically are considered on the platform as well. For example, Ulrike
Zille shows rejected travel applications submitted by her father, the
painter Rainer Zille, and the historian Ellen Pupeter explains how the
GDR bureaucratically delayed restitution requests for cultural assets.
The interviews bear witness to past transnational art histories, but
also to the persistence of relations, references, and affective ties
after the end of the GDR, as well as their relevance for contemporary
assessment. In addition to the interviews with contemporary witnesses,
academic experts provide insights into international and
interdisciplinary scholarly discourses on the topic. A digital
fellowship program led to a series of international guest contributions.
The research platform establishes a broad transcultural perspective on
artistic production in the GDR that illuminates unknown spaces as well
as contact restrictions, beyond Eurocentric narratives. Space is given
to subjective and sometimes contradictory perspectives. The platform is
structured by an interactive timeline, on which contributions and videos
on individual events of international artistic exchange are listed, and
which offers an overview. It is constantly being supplemented and
expanded by further research and is open to suggestions and comments.
"Art in Networks" started in February 2022 as a junior research group at
the Institute for Art and Music at Technical University Dresden, funded
by the European Social Fund. The project is led by Prof. Kerstin
Schankweiler, Chair of Visual Culture Studies in a Global Context.
