We use all three as well. Access to TopOrg is limited to only a few
people. TopOrg housed sensitive information such as passwords, circuit
ID's and IOS versions and what not. This works great because they don't
have keep copies of sensitive information on their PC's or on thumb
drives. They can only copy the information, they can not edit it or add
to it. If something needs to be changed they submit the information to
me and I update it.

Universe is simply topology and logical hierarchy of backbone sites,
remote sites and equipment located at those sites.

I set up the World view so anyone can open it and find the actual
location of remote sites, the floor plans for the sites, a cable room
CAD drawing and site contact information. When you first open the World
view you see 6 major remote departments. As you drill down you see
street maps and containers for each of the remote sites. Drill down a
little deeper you find building information like floor plans and
contact/access information and the location of our WAP's. Drill down
one more layer and you'll find a cable room CAD drawing that shows where
the equipment is in the room. This has helped our repair techs who have
never been to a site. They have a one stop shop on how to get to a
remote location who to talk to when they get there, the location of the
cable room and the location of the device they need to repair.

That’s just it. You’d use all 3 views. Universe is for the topology,
Location for the geography, and TopOrg for ownership. The first two are
straight-forward, but the third can be carved up whichever way makes
most sense to this customer; departments, divisions, regions, however
they might be organized.

When something goes down, these 3 views collectively identify what,
where, and who is impacted, respectively. As for multiple landscapes,
there must be some logical division there as well. Perhaps each
landscape represents a particular location or organization.

The bottom line is that it’s not a question of which view to use. To
get the most out of Spectrum, you’d be using all of them.

Subject: [spectrum] Universe vs World vs TopOrg

Greetings SPECTRUM experts,

I have a design/methodology/best practice type question. When creating
topology views for your customers, what criteria do you use to determine
the most appropriate view to develop? I've been in environments where
everything was in the Universe while World and TopOrg were left empty.
I've also been in environments where there were devices in all of these
views. I know that devices in the Universe can be copied to World
and/or TopOrg and displayed there. I was just wondering from a best
practice perspective what are your considerations prior to locating
devices that have been modeled in a fresh environment. In other words,
when building the views how do you factor in ip addresses, physical
location of devices, geography, etc. Especially as it pertains to
environments where there are multiple landscapes. Thanks.

Regards,

Calvin Lane
