Hi community,

I think I know what is wrong. I was mistaken thinking that I can do some
sort of UDP probing as I can do with TCP checks, replacing a TCP SYN,
SYNACK, ACK, FIN sequence to check out on a specific TCP port by a UDP
datagram - some answer resp. UDP datagram - ICMP port unreachable test to
check UDP responses.

What I mean is that I thought I could check any UDP port availability just
like a TCP port availability. Fact is that an endpoint device needs to be
configured to respond to a UDP echo that is normally sent on port 7 but
can (using an IPSLA responder like a Cisco switch) be configured to be
responsive to any port. That is, I need a device that is at least
responsive to UDP echos on port 7, which, confusingly, is not usually so
(which I thought it was). Thus, what can be checked is UDP responsitivity
in general, not on a specific port.

So you do not necessarily need a Cisco device as an endpoint, as long as
you do not do any tests that specifically rely on any endpoint management
intelligence. If it was, whole SPM would be rather useless, say, if I want
to check my web server against http. My router in the same network might
be delivering http traffic, but that says nothing about my web service.
:-)

Nevertheless, what I initially wanted to do was a protocol unspecific test
on port 123 to check my NTP servers. Does anyone have a clue how to do
this with out of the box features?

Freundliche Grüße / Best regards

Christian Fieres

Yes, but Christian asks for UDP(e.g. echo¹ or jitter² operations) Tests!
For HTTP, FTP, DHCP and DNS you're right.
