It depends on the PBX. I have successfully instrumented Avaya switches and Cisco CallManager Express, both of which have robust MIBs and expose a lot of information via SNMP and report all sorts of interesting notification via traps. If it is a software PBX, you may need to install an SNMP agent (net-snmp or SysEdge) and use the Agent-X to extend the agent to make it know more about your PBX. Check with your PBX vendor to find out whether they provide SNMP agent/embedded SNMP with their product.
