There are several problems with STB monitoring in Spectrum

1 – the sheer number of devices. It quickly becomes troublesome to keep all
those in Spectrum and keep Spectrum in sync with the changes. So you would
need to have some type of automation setup to make sure that you keep Spectrum
up to date. There used to be the broadband service container that worked out
well for summarizing the information. It gave you a way to group devices
together, so let’s say you want all the STBs off a particular node in one
container. Then you could alarm when a certain percentage of those went offline
or alarmed. It was handy.

2 – The changing IP address problem in Spectrum. Spectrum likes static IPs.
It doesn’t handle DHCP well at all.

So, what we used to do is to use other devices that would summarize the
information about the STBs for us. For example, there are quite a few tables
in the NC that tell you about the condition of the STB. Even that was
cumbersome to maintain. So at this point, we have moved STB mgmt to our own
in-house developed tool and we are using Spectrum for monitoring CMTS up
through the core. Anything between the CMTS and the home is handled by our own
tool.

This could be an interesting area for CA to explore. However, they would need
to be able to handle DHCP and also link in with provisioning systems to keep
modeling accurate.

Subject: [spectrum] Set top box (STB) monitoring

Does anyone have experience which you can share doing deep down monitoring set
top boxes (STB’s), using Spectrum on any other product or method?

Thanks,
