Hi Siegfried, list,

years ago there was quite some discussion regarding wild cards for "systems
monitoring". If I remember correctly, CA implemented something at least for
filesystems. Unfortunately the documentation does not say anything about it.
Unless CA states something different, you can't do much about the rules
featureset, since that is hard-coded into Spectrum.

In case of more than one or a variable number of these processes per server,
how do you know how many to expect on each server?

However, there might be some helpful scenarios:
1)
Use SystemEDGE agents which can make use of regex for process monitors.
Unfortunately this cannot be combined with the Spectrum rules but has to be
managed either locally on each server or through VAIM / some other central
configuration deployment.
If you're not using SystemEDGE already, this might involve some significant
licensing cost.

2)
Use some (legacy?) NSMr11 agents which support regex for process names and can
be configured through Spectrum sysmon rules. See picture below. Note: NSM 3.1
does not offer this functionality in conjunction with Spectrum sysmon rules.
Again, if you're not using NSM already, this might involve some significant
licensing cost.

3)
Build some customization by doing:
On a regular basis

- read some external documentation base (e.g. CMDB) to get information
about which processes have to run on which server exactly

- setup and update rfc2970 process monitoring per server with the
correct and full process names (through web services or vnmsh)

Betreff: [spectrum] Global Process Monitoring with RegEx or Wildcards (oracle
version 12c)

Hi all,

we would like to monitor our oracle 12c servers with rulesets. But the name
syntax of processes changed since version 12c. The process names now look like:
ora_"subprocess"_"dbinstance"
Examples:
ora_dia0_dbinst
ora_dbrm_dbinst

Spectrum is not able to process wildcards or regex in rulesets. Even with
watches there is no way.
We are looking for a way to monitor these processes globally without local
process rules or local configured process monitoring on the servers itself.
Someone a hint?

Sincerely Yours

Mit freundlichen Grüßen
