Robert, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I understand that (a) compatibility is given, more than this, a necessity unless you create a fresh database and (b) I made a mistake by talking about a "5-byte counter" which in fact is merely a "5-nybble counter" or, what I actually thought of, a "5 hex-char counter" ;-)
Gee, I wish I had had this doc three months ago! I came from 9.2.2 and went through different scenarios until I came up with a 9.2.2 -> 9.4 -> 10.1 -> 10.1.1 migration plan. Dealing with at least five different "Install" documents by CA for the respective interim versions was HELL and I doubted that everything came up running again until shortly before starting the upgraded SS for the first time. But having a step-by-step migration plan beforehand and testing all crucial features before touching production proved once again as the best way to do something like this and took quite a bit of my time. (This is what management ignores with great effort: For them, it is just "click here to install, next, next, finish" and, come again, you need ten days for an upgrade? We grant you four, make that five in case you need to call support ... :-( Thanks again! Has anyone tested 10.2 yet and might enlighten me whether I should pay attention to possible changes in handle value sizes when planning a 10.2 deployment? I don' t think I'm the only geek with quite a bunch of CLI scripts that may need a change here and there in case we get another digit in between.
