I had two books at the time, and they both must have been out in
England before the summer of 1981 because we moved house then and I'd
already had them by then. One of them must have been 'You Can Do The
Cube' because that kid's face is so familiar, although I don't
recoginise the cover - maybe an earlier edition had a different cover??

The other one may have been 'Mastering Rubik's Cube' by Don Taylor,
because the cover looks familiar. Or it also may have been 'SIMPLE
SOLUTION TO RUBIK'S CUBE' by JAMES NOURSE - also looking familiar.

What I do remember is having an argument in the playground with this
other kid who could do the cube (we were the only two in the whole
school) He said I was cheating because I didn't turn the cube upside
down to finish the bottom layer??? Maybe this gives a clue about the
different methods we were using. For about a month we stood in the
yard doing cube after cube after cube for all the kids who had them
(everyone in 80/81 whenever it was). My record was 59 seconds - which
hilariously enough was just counted out loud by my brother without any
kind of watch or timing device. Very scientific :)
