Play with the lighting more - look at some still life photos some people have taken to get an idea of what I'm talking about. Lights usually aren't that close to the subject. Oh, And again, think about using area lights, they really do emulate the real world better. OOh! Idea! if you get REALLY bored, try making a used speedcube, peeling stickers, fading colors, chipped edges and all.
