The major problem I've found with doing opposite cross are the corners. I've
been training myself for a long time to able to recognize a corner from only
two stickers, and if I switch to opposite cross the color schemes of the
corners are all backwards, which slows me down considerably.

I'm not an expert with the cross, but starting from either white or 
yellow (opposite side) is a Good Idea, since it does not really 
change the rest of the algorithm.
That's why the standard color scheme is interesting.
I used it as a fallback strategy, now starting with white or yellow 
does not matter anymore. More and more, the problem is to find a cube 
that does not look lucky.
