I think that for CFOP, the extended cross is always the way to go.

I would pretty much always start with a 2x2 block and then finish the
Xcross. Usually I could see a 2x2x1 Block and build it, and then
insert the last edge to make the 2x2. ANd THEN find the remaining 2
edges and put them in to finish the X-cross.

With the Roux method, you take it one step further. You build a 2x2x1
block, but instead of looking for just one edge to insert, you have to
find 2 pieces. Find an edge and a corner and pair them up an insert,
to make a 3x2x1 block. Or you can insert an edge or corner right
away, and then find and insert the other piece. Though i think that
this is slower...

Cross 4 pieces
2x2 Block 4 pieces
Extended Cross 6 pieces
Gille's Block 5 pieces

Its harder than a cross or petrus block, but easier than DIRECTLy
solving for X-cross.

FOR ALL YOU ROUX SOLVERS

For the 2nd Block, I always find the DR edge and insert as quickly as
possible. Then I just solve the 2 CE pairs with an all too familiar
F2L strategy.
Howerver, There are MANY shortcuts you can find by using the M slice.
A F2L style chart with algorithms would be twice as big for this
method. There are many more places that a Corner and an edge can be
simultaneously. I never used F2L charts to learn F2L. In ROUX and
F2L, I think that Intuition is better.

1. What color scheme do you guys use for ROux? I use white and yellow
blocks always, with red or orange on bottom.

2. How fast can you guys do step 4? Gilles told me that he uses
Method 2 as his main method, and that a 4.5 sec avg is possible with
this method alone. Im at about 7-8 Sec..
