For the edges, at the worst you'll have 4 cycles (4 3-Cycles makes 12 edges solved ;-))
Usually it's 1 or 2. Also, when you start the memorization of the edges, look if any cubie is in it's right position but flipped. I usually solve this one at the end of the edge-part. After a bit of practice, you should be able to detect if you have an orientation problem.
