I think when most people start they are like you, and just want to
solve a cube.  When I first learned how to solve I just blindly
learned algs and did them.  Then I started to deconstruct them, see
what they did to the other pieces on the cube, which helped me cut
down time because I could set things up to do multiple things at once.
 Once you really get into cubing you will start to see what your
algorithms do.  Most are pretty straightforward...especially in a
beginner solution.  Anyways...off to badminton practice...
