Hey Gilles, I guess my best response is "I don't know."
I think full color neutrality would really make solving the cross easy. I actually used to do this in my first year of speedcubing and average about 5.5 moves for the cross (1 move less than 1 color very consistently). I switched to one color when that was the "cool" thing to do though. I guess I do like the benefit gained from always solving the same color(s) to some extent. I think I would have a harder time finding an Xcross if I was searching on any color (which is a huge part of my personal strategy) but maybe with practice it would work? I guess for myself I am trying to find a balance between improving my odds for an easy start, and having color familiarity. For me opposite color solving does that, since I always solve the same F2L edges. I guess for me personally I don't want to move back to full color neutrality, since I think I wouldn't use Xcross as often. Also I do like having the F2L edges always looking the same. Also, I do sometimes solve a non-white and non-yellow color if the cross is 2 moves or less, or the Xcross is 4 moves or so. This is very rare, but I do get fast solves with it sometimes. I guess the full color neutrality depends on the person. I personally don't want that much freedom, but more than just solving on color all the time.
