In many ways I am right with you Stefan. I don't think solving it yourself is necessarily a good start for speedcubing but the satisfaction is worth the effort. I was very surprised when I took the cube up again in 2003 that most people in this forum didn't solve it for themselves. Having said that I think general puzzle solving techniques and experience are important (in life generally!) and if you start to learn them by being taught how to solve the cube well thats good experience too.
