Yeah, those centers must be the same ones they use on factory-
assembled cubes.  Therefore they are made to be easy to glue on.  
Unfortunately that stinks for tuning.  My solution is just to use a 
tiny drop of glue on each tab, so that later removal of the caps is 
not a big deal for retuning.  Like Stefan, I hate using glue, but no 
other solution has worked for me on the DIY kits.

The older white ones used the same (or similar) mold as Rubik's 
Studio cubes, and they pop in easily and stay in.  The new design is 
probably cheaper to make since the walls of the center piece are 
thinner.  It also makes the cube lighter.
