Basically what you're looking at is an optimized algorithm for the F2L. It consists of finger tricks. The finger tricks are the moves between the ( ) that you can easily and quickly do with flicks of your wrist. Of course not all algorithms can be composed of just finger tricks so you have moves that are not finger tricks, indicated with a [ ]. If you just execute the moves and ignored the [ ] anyways it still would have worked...
