Hi,
I also average 2-3 seconds for the cross. During the inspection I 
also try to see my first F2L-pair. But sometimes the cross is very 
difficult for me. In this case I can usually see only how to solve 3 
cross edges.
The most important thing to solve the cross is to know the colour 
scheme of your cube very well.
