Just bite the bullet, man. I took mine apart and lubed them with the same silicone spray I use on my 3x3x3 and they're both excellent now. Search google for "disassemble 4x4x4" and "disassemble 5x5x5" to get directions for how to safely take them apart and put them back together.
It took me about an hour to put my 5x5x5 back together, so I'd give yourself some time. But they both went from nearly unusable (both made my hands really ache to even complete a single solve) to awesome. It's definitely worth it. Plus, the mechanism for the 4x4x4 is something you really have to see. I still have no idea how it works, but it's very cool.
