I have a field guide on insects which tells me that headlice are "rare"
in the UK. So much for the fieldguide -- the author should visit a
British primary school!

My mother (now 75) was checked for them regularly (at school and at
home), but says that she never knew anyone who had them. Nowadays
there is less awareness of the problem (no checking at school, AFAIK),
even though most children get infested at some point: all 3 of mine
have had them.

So: the headlouse is possibly extinct in Sweden, but thriving in the
UK. Does anyone know what the situation is elsewhere in Europe?

Mike
