Well I finally got curious enough to take apart one of my "M1005B"
cubes from Restoration Hardware. (I had never taken it apart because
it turned so smoothly out of the box). As I suspected, they use the
same parts that are included in the new 2006 DIY kits (but presumably
with rivets, not screws). Basically this means they have the new
corner caps (with gap) which results in even turning on all three
internal faces of each corner. I've seen at least one M1005B cube in
Hasbro packaging as well, so the new parts are beginning to make their
way into retail. I applaud Seven Towns for their continuous
improvement of the cube mechanism these past couple years.
