hi --

i have a (chicago-based) ameritech dsl setup working for
windows 98. i've checked that i can log in, that i have the
right vpi vci numbers, etc. ameritech has us use a client
called "enternet" (from efficient networks), which uses
PPPoE to talk to the modem.

now i want to run a freebsd firewall, nat, etc. so: i
freshly installed freebsd 4.4-RELEASE and followed the
instructions to get the speedtouch w/ pppoa working.
everything seems great: the modem is recognized, it syncs
up, ppp can see it, etc.

but i can't seem to lcp handshake. i've tried just about
every authentication protocol, and i'm pretty sure i've
got the rest of the settings down. i've disabled just about
all the compression protocols, etc. but i can't get
anything to work.

question 1: is there an ameritech subscriber out there who
has gotten this to work, in linux (which i tried before) or
freebsd (which i'd prefer)?

question 2: is there a difference between pppoa and pppoe
from the point of view of ameritech? AFAICT it shouldn't
matter how i talk to the modem, right? b/c i can't find a
way to use pppoe w/ the modem under freebsd, and i couldn't
get it to work under mandrake 8.1 (i had lots of problems
there otherwise.)

help!

take care, Ben Lee
