sorry -- i have a speedtouch USB modem. under windows i use
a client which talks to it via pppoe (alcatel claims on
their website that the speedtouch is pppoe and pppoa compatible.)

so you think the reason why i can't lcp handshake is because
i'm using pppoa to talk to the speedtouch?

as i mentioned above apparently it's an option (under
windows, and linux at least) to talk to the speedtouch via
pppoe (over usb).

sorry for being a newbie, but what are these and how do i
tell which one i have (from windows, say?)

oh well, it was worth a try. anyone out there use pppoe w/
the speedtouch?

this is good news. but i'm still curious: i was under the
impression that from the point of view of the server
(ameritech), it shouldn't matter if i use pppoa or pppoe:
it's just a way to talk to the modem, and ends before the
phone line. is this wrong?

thanks, and take care - Ben
