i have had similar problems with an old pentium. i believe that the problem is
with the usb card/pci bus. i'm informed by the list that the modem sucks up a
lot of power for a usb device (altho it is the only device on my card) which
may be causing a problem. sometimes the modem refuses the device numbers
offered it by the card (can be seen in dmesg log on debian) which means the
modem is never found by modem_run, this seems to be alleviated if usb-ohci
isnt loaded immediately so i have inserted a sleep command into my scripts.

i cant yet tell how much better the 1.1 drivers are as i only managed to
upgrade this weekend so i'll wait and see. i would imagine that the hard
crashes i have experienced are more likely due to flaky hardware (the pentium
or the modem) and wont be solved by the upgrade. these require a hard reset to
get the mchine back (thank heavens for journaled file systems!) but the other
problems usually involved modem_run dying which just require a restart of the
script and some housecleaning.

if i cant get an improvement in reliability i may have to recommend an upgrade
to a modem/router box as replacement. unfortunately this will cost at least
130 quid which is about the same as another computer with usb.

have you turned on verbose logging when you run modem_run? this will help
identifying exactly where the problem starts.

so to summarise - i think *my* problem is with old hardware interfacing to a
crappy modem and as you are having similar sounding problems you may want to
consider this too.
