Hi Peter.
Greetings from Toronto, Cananda.
After reading most of the posts in (
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg02986.html ) the
SpeedTouch mail archive, I now understand why Linux is not gaining much
headway on the desktop.
Have you figured out a "reliable" solution yet?

Hardware companies like Alcatel and the Linux kernel people must
collaborate so that there is one "best" way to add support for their
products and therefore make Linux look more attractive to Windoze users.
Reading all these posts has been nothing less than neauseating as their
is no unified solution.

I also notice that a huge issue is never discussed about PPPoE and USB
DSL modems. This issue is about using PPPoE to connect to the net
without requiring an Ethernet card.
Surely Linux is able to allow me to access the net without having to
install a NIC. After all, Windoze-XP does it quite well with my Alcatel
Speed Touch USB DSL modem. Everywhere I look for info on this relating
to Linux, it says that I need a NIC.

I say ridiculous!

Look at it this way! Bell Canada's Sympatico High Speed DSL service
costs $28 US for unlimited access, and the majority of their customers
all choose the USB non-Ethernet card option. I'd say they have, at least
2 or 3 million subscribers (and growing). As you can see, that's a lot
of potential Linux users who are stuck on Windoze and will NOT switch
over if they can't even access the net. Do you know how frustraing it is
to be captivated by KDE3 and/or Enlightenment, but can't even get on the
net? I hate this dual booting crap! I want to use Linux full time.

I say its high time this silly scenario comes to a close.

Thanks for listening and I hope you also find a "reliable" solution.

Max.

step-by-step HowTo if a RELIABLE solution can be obtained.
