The strange thing is that you don't get any messages. You may want to check the following things:
No messages: o check you /etc/syslog.conf. Maybe pppd messages aren't logged o run ls -ltr on /var/log/messages. Maybe pppd messages go to another file o run strace pppd ... . This is a last resort. You get lots of output but you will see if pppd attempts to open a file that isn't there. others: o run ps -efa | grep pppd to see if it is running.
