It seems there is a package installed on my redhat 8.0 system called
hotplug, which was issuing a message. I have un-installed this and
re-booted, in case it made a difference. It doesn't seem to do so.

Usually both the ADSL and USB linghts on my modem are green. Sometimes
when I try starting it, the ADSL light goes out, and the usb light
goes red. Sometimes not.

Anyway, here are my syslog entries:
