Dear Knowing Ones,
I've got a Alcatel USB ADSL modem which I've been able to install and get running on
Suse 8.2 Linux using the Speedbundle scripts.

It works really well, and most of the time when I boot my machine the connection comes
up automatically and I can use the internet connection immediately. However other
times I boot up and the connection isn't running.

I've tried running pppd, but this then just starts to generate random code, something
like:-

}}(+)(+_)}{}{(*_(*&(*(*_)&**&_(*_)*_&&Y&_(*_(**&&&&&&&)*&*()*_)(*_)*_(*

This continues until I use Ctrl-D to stop the process, and no internet connection
starts up.

I've found that if I su and then run modprobe \* then reboot the machine the
connection usually (but not always) comes up. In the very worst case I have to swap to
the Windows boot, start the machine (something I do less and less nowadays) and start
the connection using the script under Windows. Then reboot into Linux and the
connection starts up.

So my question is:-

What do I need to do to fix the pppd so it works (I have made no modification from the
one installed by Speedbundle). If the connection doesn't come up then what is the
correct way to start it.

Thanks in anticipation

Richard
