Hi,

When my connection drops, I sometimes I can't reconnect without rebooting the
computer:

Jan 13 22:54:42 draco pppd[4285]: Exit.
Jan 13 22:58:18 draco pppd[25026]: Plugin pppoatm.so loaded.
Jan 13 22:58:18 draco pppd[25026]: PPPoATM plugin_init
Jan 13 22:58:18 draco pppd[25026]: PPPoATM setdevname - remove unwanted options
Jan 13 22:58:18 draco pppd[25026]: PPPoATM setdevname_pppoatm - SUCCESS:0.38
Jan 13 22:58:18 draco pppd[25026]: pppd 2.4.2b3 started by jim, uid 0
Jan 13 22:58:18 draco pppd[25026]: connect(0.38): Address already in use
Jan 13 22:58:18 draco pppd[25026]: Exit.

This typically occurs about once a week.

This is using the kernel driver and Linux 2.6.0. However, this is a problem
which has plagued me for a while, including when I used the kernel mode driver
under 2.4, and the userspace driver under 2.4. (IIRC, the error message is
different with the user space driver.)

I've tried searching the mailing list (with some difficulty because the archive
won't search for entire expressions like "Address already in use), but I can't
find anything useful, except "disconnect and reconnect the modem", which
doesn't help me - I need the machine to run for long periods unattended, and
want to be able to log in remotely so I'm not here to unplug the modem.

Removing and reinserting the USB modules is not an option either, as there is
often a USB harddisk and other devices plugged into the same computer.

Any suggestions? Is this a known issue which cannot be fixed, as quite a few
people seem to have similar problems? If so, it should be documented in the
FAQ or somewhere, as I would not have bought a Speedtouch modem if I had known
about it. Or is it a rare quirk which developers are having trouble tracing?
If so, I'm willing to try providing whatever debugging information I can to
help get it fixed. Just let me know what is needed.

Thanks in advance,
Jim
