When I wrote a script for the kernel driver, I saw this message if there is not enough time after the modprobe speedtch, firmware loading by modem_run and the start of pppd. There is a sleep in Duncan script. I put a sleep 5, it may be less in Duncan script. My script is at http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/ipcop/ipcop/src/rc.d/rc.alcatelusbk?rev=1.6.2.7 My script does not work well with v1.3 modem_run new feature but does it job well with v1.2. Usb reset is a hugly hack but help sometime to unlock the situation with uncertain firmware state. It is called : - during network reconfiguration, - when the firmware don't agree to load, - after a certain amount of pppd failing attempts to connect (it help sometime for a unknow reason, I don't know if it is usb/atm or modem related) It may not be so easy to do with many modems running in the same time.
