Hi there,

I know that this has been discussed, debated and documented all over
the internet, but I just reinstalled my Ubuntu Hoary, and once again,
am having hell trying to get my Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem to work.

Perhaps the amount of information, scripts and configuration
suggestions is the root to the confusion...

Anyway, I am more knowledgeable now, and I would like to find a
definite know-how to set up the modem via the KERNEL, instead of the
userland driver "speedtouch".

I would think that allowing the kernel to load my modem would boost
performance, no?

Anyway, therefore, I have followed the instructions at
http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/ubuntu/index.html to the letter,
with the exception of the firmware extraction segment. I used the
firmware DEB from Marco d'Itri instead.

I have also copied all the different firmware one at a time into
/etc/speedtouch - which should NOT have any effect, since this
directory is meant for the userland "speedtouch" driver.

Success? No, not at all.

Could you then advise me on how I may set up this modem on my Ubuntu
system then?

Thank you very much!

Best Regards,
