Hi all,

I ony just subscribed, so I don't think this will end up being part of
the correct thread. It's supposed to follow on from:-

http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg07523.html

Charles, seeing as how earlier in the thread, you were compiling ppp by
hand, I'm guessing you just kept that, rather than installing ppp via
the gentoo package system.

If you had emerged ppp, like the howto says to, then the
/etc/init.d/net.ppp0 script would have been installed for you.

This is also a generic script, and works like gentoo usually does, and
so uses the config files it finds in /etc/conf.d/.

The script you have used, has a hardcoded value of "speedtch" in, which
isn't very nice, especially seeing as how that value is defined in
/etc/conf.d/net.ppp0. It's much better to use the one that came with the
ebuild, as it will deal with pppN devices, you just symlink each time,
e.g. /etc/init.d/net.pppN to the ppp0 one, and create a new config
file. This also means that when you upgrade ppp, the etc-update script
can happily go and update the init script, without damaging any of your
configuration.

I really would urge you to use the portage tree rather than compiling by
hand, it's one of, if not the best packaging system there is.

So, if you actually follow the howto in full, you should find that it
_is_ sufficient to get you working, but please let me know if not.

Cheers,

Dunc
