Thanks Andre and Duncan:

Andre> pppoatm.so is trying to modprobe pppoatm. The error message is
harmless.

Perhaps the error message is not the symptom of the correct problem
then? I did see such a message in the past that was harmless on my old
2.4.26 system.

Definitely the computer would not connect to the modem, then I only
changed
loadable module support (y) and the
Generic USB ATM/DSL core I/O support (USB_ATM)
Alcatel Speedtouch USB support (USB_SPEEDTOUCH)
to Module, then it worked (after recompiling the kernel etc) ... but
it turns out it is only working when it calls modem_run which was still
in the hotplug from before :? if I remove that script from the hotplug
folder it will not connect.

So something funny is going on. I have not yet tried the patch below
since I don't actually have it!

Also, I was using the ppp located in the speedbundle , 2.4.2b ; then I
tried getting 2.4.3 from
http://www.samba.org/ppp/download.html
and patching with the patch at
 http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/download/pppoatm.diff but the patch
failed. I fixed it manually though and compiled it correctly. I think
the patch is out of date for 2.4.3 (specifically the makefile that
generates pppoatm.so)

The attached patch was stripped by the list server! Is it on the web or
can you email it to mee at r dot atwood at imperial dot ac dot uk? Or
just paste as text into a message if not tooo long.

thanks

I am not at home just now, so I won't try and remember the exact
messages, but I double checked the location specified in firmware.agent
and the same as the default for slackware, and the same as that reported
by make install of firmware-extractor. The log message said it was
searching for speedtch-1.bin.0.00 then .0 then .bin but did not specify
where it was actually looking; is this easy to find out?

firmware.html> The default seems to be /lib/firmware but it could be
anywhere. On Slackware 10 (for instance) it's /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware.
