add "debug" to your pppd options file (eg:/etc/ppp/peers/speedtch), or to the command line where pppd is called (eg: if the command is pppd call speedtch, change it to pppd call speedtch debug). This will output debugging info to your system logs. Also, try increasing the delay between firmware loading and the launching of pppd. Ciao, D.
