Try to add some modules in your /etc/modules file :

ppp_deflate

pppoe
pppox
speedtch
I had to do this to make my Speedtouch work on Debian (Sarge), but I
don't remember if it's enough. The main problem is that there may be a
confusion between the kernel and the user driver.
Good luck, I had a few nervous breakdowns trying to configure it. And
don't forget to write down what you did, for the next time ;-)
