Hi! I had a speedtouch working with ubuntu edgy (and in Portugal too) until recently, when I got a Sagem 1200 router off ebay. The speedtouch works fine, even though the sagem seems to allow faster throughput. What I did was basically what you have on the howtos you linked, you might want to try executing the instructions in the script by hand first just to check if it might be a timing problem.
