I have no idea how to find out what pppd version I have.  How do I do 
that?  as for the "2.4.b1"  I was just simply reporting what the syslog 
told me.

And yes, I did "modprobe pppoatm" before calling pppd - the line to do 
so is in my dial script as per the instructions on the website. (please 
see original post to link to the ubuntuforums thread to follow what I 
have done so far to resolve this)  I am also running an out of the box 
version of ubuntu 6.06 without any patches that I am aware of. (I have 
yet to connect it to the net to download anything at all)
