I have recently set up a Debian Etch-based system as an ADSL
router/firewall, on an old Celeron 500 system I had kicking around with
a Speedtouch (Green, stingray-style, Rev0 I think) USB modem. I have
used the latest KQD6_3.012 firmware from the speedtouch website.

My problem is, although the ATM driver syncs at 6 meg, running various
speed tests I am getting a connection of around 1 meg, or download
speeds of approx 70-120kbytes/sec. This doesn't happen if I use the
router supplied by my ISP. Also confusing is that if I use multiple
connections (using either Aria2 on the firewall or my other server or
Download Accelerator Plus on my Windows box) i can get approximately
400kbytes/sec download. Running the MyVoIPSpeed test (from
http://myvoipspeed.visualware.com/) says I get a QoS score of between 2%
and 50% (to explain, the reason I am doing this is to allow easier setup
of a VoIP PBX, and having the external IP actualy on the box makes
things easier).

I know that the box has more work to do in this situation (all the
networking layers right down to ATM), so I checked CPU usage, and this
is below 5%, and memory usage is also very low (about 60 meg used
including a load of stuff in the background). I also checked the USB
status in /proc and the device is connected at 12MBps

Anyone have any idea whats going on? System details are below.

Regards,
Karl Wagner
