Hello,

I installed Ubuntu 6.10 today and, following the excellent instructions
at http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/ubuntu/index.html , successfully
managed to make my SpeedTouch 330 connect to the Internet. So far, so good!

However, the connection only works if I boot into Linux with the modem
already plugged in. If I plug the modem USB connector in when already
booted (as is possible in Windows), the lights on the modem come on as
normal but no Internet connection results (at least, web pages don't
load, emails don't download, etc.). Just in case you are thinking, "well
why doesn't he just leave it plugged in", I am using a laptop, which I
move around the house with and therefore don't always want to be
connected, and also have to share the connection with my girlfriend.

My question is, then: Is there a way, e.g. some command I enter in the
terminal, to get a connection once the modem is plugged in and ready, or
will it always require a reboot? As an aside, is there also a command
which will allow me to see how many bytes have been sent and received
since connection?

One thing which crossed my mind is that the modem setup instructions are
for Ubuntu 6.06. Is there a different procedure I should have followed
for the latest version which would not result in this problem? As you
may have guessed, I am fairly new to Linux, so step-by-step answers
would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Toby Reynolds
