The way I understand it is that there is no need to write a long item on one line, one can split it in several line while 'staying' in the list item. It is not saying that this second line will be a new line in the output. On the contrary. Generally speaking, one line in rest does not become one line on the output, and this is one of the things where rest powerful : you don't need to handle by yourself the line length.
